The Hind in the Baltic Sea

New-Picture-6.jpg

Its evening and the hind can finally leave forest and come out on the beach to refresh itself from heat, insect stings and thirst. You can see that this hind really enjoys this swim. Summer is the time when blood-sucking insects like mosquitoes, gadflies and black flies make life harder not only for humans but for animals too. It is also the time for giving birth to and raising their young ones. Brackish sea water is mineral-rich and deer likes it. It not only quenches thirst but also compensates lack of minerals and salt as well as heals. The sea is the only natural source for salt in Latvia. Predators receive salt while eating meat. Herbivores need to look for other sources – salt lick provided by hunters or the sea.
